School Policies — Attendance
Attendance and academic success are highly correlated; Colegio Petite adheres to strict attendance and tardy policies.
The Core Rules
If a student accrues ten consecutive absences he or she will be withdrawn from the school. Withdrawn students may re-enroll, if space permits, and continue their education at the start of the next term.
In order for students to be promoted, they must attend 90% of the school year — 162 of the scheduled 180 school days, allowing a maximum of 18 absences. Excessive absences will be forwarded to the appropriate local truancy enforcement officer; with a class-3 charge, parents/guardians may be held accountable to court appearance and fines.
Absences
If an illness or emergency keeps the student from attending school, the parent/guardian must contact the school daily and explain the reason. When the student returns, a doctor’s/written excuse must be handed in at the time of return, or the student will be marked unexcused. The student is responsible for completing all missing work accrued during the absence. If an extended absence should occur, the parent/guardian must contact school administration to discuss the circumstances — in some cases, this may involve the student not receiving credit for the current block. All absences must be phoned into the school office by the parent/guardian; non-excused absences are considered truant. An excused absence simply identifies that the parent or guardian knew the student was absent and notified the school — all absences, including excused absences, count against the total number allowed.
Excused Absences
Genuine illness or injury · illness in excess of three days with a written doctor’s excuse · serious emergency of an immediate family member · death in the immediate family · court-ordered absence · religious holiday observance.
Unexcused Absences
Out-of-town travel during scheduled instructional time · vacation days during instructional time · doctor/dental appointments without a doctor’s note · any other reason not in the excused list. Exceptions are at the Principal’s discretion (extended hospital stays, extremely contagious illnesses, etc.).
Tardy & Early-Departure Policy
Tardiness interrupts learning for everyone. Students arriving late to, returning to, or departing from campus during the regular school day must be checked in and out by a parent or other responsible adult through the front office. Students are not allowed to leave campus early without first signing out in the front office. Three unexcused tardies and early dismissals equal one absence.
Tardiness and early departures are excused only with supporting documentation for a court appearance or a medical, dental, or counseling appointment. Tardiness caused by sleeping in, babysitting, accompanying other people to appointments, etc. will not be excused. Consequences will be issued for unexcused absences and tardiness.
